Democracy day: A reaffirmation of patriotism – Dr.Austin Amadi

DR AMADI ROBEThis is a day requiring all Nigerians to challenge themselves with the question of what they can do for Nigeria, and not what Nigeria can do for them. Democracy Day to me is a reaffirmation of patriotism. Let us join hands in strengthening the unity of our nation, with tolerance for all as accorded by the constitution.

Having assured Nigerians of a transition to democracy, General Abdusalam Abubakar (last military leader of Nigeria) along with the world observed the adoption of the May 5, 1999 constitution. Then president –elect, and former head of state-Chief Olusegun Obasanjo took the oath of office on that beautiful 29th day of May 1999.Thus, the birth of Democracy Day. We have never looked back to military rule.

MAPIt therefore becomes essential that we take stock of what progress we as a nation have made since the inception of the first Democracy Day in Nigeria. My wish is that all Nigerians appreciate this day as a nonpartisan day. A day that marks the united projection of the destiny of our great nation. God bless Nigeria.
