Governor Okorocha canvases support for State Police.

The reinstated call for state police by some relevant stakeholders in the country received a major boost when Governor Owelle Rochas Okorocha of Imo State described the agitation as a right step in the right direction.

Governor Okorocha, who spoke in government house, Owerri, said State Police remains a ‘great idea’ considering the fact that it would decentralize the police and make it more effective.

 In his own words:

“the agitation for state police has ever remained a right step in the right direction considering the obvious fact that such would decentralize the police for efficiency. It would also be a penance to the security challenges facing our country and further en throne a governor as the chief security officer of the state in practical terms”

On whether such would not be abused by the governors, Governor Okorocha said:

“the issue of abuse should not be an excuse of not having the state police. Even now, we still have the issue of abuses when a governor can use his relationship of whatsoever in either the presidency or the office of the inspector-General to achieve whatever purpose’

He posited that the gains associated in having the state police in Nigeria supercedes whatever fear people may habour if actualized.

Similarly, Governor Okorocha has predicated a difficult time for the few un-repented kidnappers in the state as government is set to implement the capital punishment as passed into law by the State House of Assembly. The governor also stated that under the renewed commitment to flush-out kidnappers towards making the state for investment, government would also pull down houses where victims are kept and confiscate properties of the kidnappers and their collaborators.
