Shortly after the Imo State government announced the sack of Prof.Bethrand Nwoke, tongues began to wag.
Many were curious to know why a man of such high standing integrity was fired especially now that cheques running into billions of naira had been rolled out by Governor Okorocha to fund the Free Education programme.

The sacking of the vice chancellor late Wednesday evening might not be unconnected with the seeming disagreement the vice chancellor, had with Governor Okorocha on the administration of the state university, especially as regards the free education policy of the state government.
Daily Sun gathered that the embattled vice chancellor who was immediately replaced by the former National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Prof Ukachukwu Awuzie, had demanded among other things improved funding of the state university, especially in the area of infrastructural development and to make money available to put the necessary things in place for the full accreditation of the courses of some of the departments. Daily Sun equally learnt that the Prof Nwoke had also been at loggerheads with the government over its refusal to regularize his appointment.
A senior lecturer in the university, who spoke with Daily Sun on the condition of anonymity, stated that the sacked VC had been locked in a running battle with the state governor, who had refused to regularize his appointment, despite calls from ASUU, noting that the overbearing interference of the government in the running of the institution. According to him, “this is the second vice chancellor of IMSU to be sacked by Okorocha and it is not healthy for the system.”
