Governor Rochas Okorocha, has threatened to suspend the salaries of traditional rulers in Mbaitoli Local Government area of the state if security of lives and property does not improve in the area.
According to information contained in a communique from the Government House, the Governor disclosed this is while addressing traditional rulers of the area at the secretariat of the state council of Traditional Rulers, at Owerri, the state capital.
“The governor spoke in reaction to recent high spate of robbery, assassination and kidnapping in the area, including the attack of the local government Divisional Police Headquarters, Nwaorieubi, by armed men.
Owelle Okorocha who noted that there would never be development without security of lives and property enjoined the Ezes to step up security surveillance and collaboration with the Nigeria Police, since, according to the governor, the traditional rulers are the Chief Security officers of their respective communities.
Eze Agunwa Ohiri of Obi-Orodo autonomous community, Mbaitoli LGA and chairman State Council of traditional rulers said that the LGA is so vast but lack adequate security manpower and logistics and asked the governor to use his exalted office to assist the LGA on working vehicles.
Eze Peter Okwara of Umueze autonomous Community argued that the traditional rulers in the area have been working hard to guarantee security in their domain in line with their new role in the state 4th tier system of government but regretted that information given to the security agencies are often divulged to the criminals.
The Divisional Police Office [DPO] in the area, Mr. W.c. Oyakilome told the governor that he is not getting enough support from inhabitants of the area and that his unit lack adequate logistics to cover the vast area of Mbaitoli.
The DPO hence enjoined the people of the area to report every crime and suspicious individuals to the police pledging that the police will guarantee their safety.”
