SPEAKERS CUP: Rt.Hon Benjamin Uwajumogu's Tournament kicks off

The second edition of Imo House of Assembly Speakers (under 17) cup competition has kicked-off in Owerri the Imo State Capital. This took place on Friday the 14th of October 2011.

The football tournament is among the 27 Local government areas in the State involving 27 participating teams. In his opening speech the award winning Speaker of Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Chukwuemeka Uwajumogu Stressed the need to keep Imo youths “sports” busy and to fish out hidden talents from the rural areas, so as to extend the much needed dividends of democracy which also includes the Rescue Mission Programme of the State government.

The speaker who was ably represented by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Donatus Ozoemenam noted that the youths are the true leaders of tomorrow, pointing out that no responsible government would fold its hands and watch the welfare of the younger ones be in dis-array.

“I also charge you to shun all vices and evil tendencies like Armed Robbery, Stealing, kidnapping, 419, Assassinations, Election Violence, thuggery, Exam-malpractices, cult activities and other violent activities etc. Be a good citizen. The present government in the State is youths friendly. That is why we have many youths as commissioners, special Assistants and legislative Assistants etc. We are taking sports in Imo State to the next level. Please support us”.

The Speaker further said that sports is a uniting factor and enjoined the youths to play the ball according to the rules and regulations of the competition, pointing out that consistency and steadfastness in sports activities will propel them to become another, Kanu Nwankwo, Daniel Amokachi, Stephen Keshi and the Amuneke’s etc.

Rt. Hon.Benjamin Uwajumogu equally commended the members of youths Sports Federation of Nigeria YSFON in organizing the competition. The sports loving legislator later declared the competition open by kicking – off the ball. The tournament started with the Owerri Municipal team and that of the Ihitte-Uboma team. The match produced one of the fastest goals in the world of football as Master Chidiebere Amaechi scored for Owerri Municipal within 30 seconds.

In his speech, the State Chairman of YSFON, Comrade Sonny Opara commended the ebullient speaker for sponsoring the tourney and promised to organize violent free competition.
