The governor of Imo State, Owelle Rochas Okorocha has described as a wonderful innovation, the (YouWIN) programme of the Federal Government of Nigeria and commended the Presidency for the initiative. Owelle Rochas Okorocha stated this while speaking at the South east zonal launch of the Youth Enterprise with Innovation in Nigeria, (YouWIN) Women programme held at Dr. Sam Mbakwe Exco Chambers, Government House, Owerri. The governor used the occasion to appeal to the South east women to use their God-given roles as mothers to wield into political differences in the region in order to ensure a peaceful co-existence among the South Eastern States of Nigeria.
In her address, the wife of the governor of Imo State, Nneoma Nkechi Rochas Okorocha expressed happiness for the women programme saying,
‘women are good managers of resources who if adequately encouraged or empowered will excel in whatever endeavor they engaged themselves’.
Nneoma Nkechi Okorocha urged the Commissioners for Women Affairs and Social Development of the South Eastern States who are also the coordinators of the scheme in their different States, to fully sensitize their women on the benefits of the programme and on how to apply for the grant.
Speaking during the occasion, the Honourable Minister, Federal Ministry ofWomen Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Zainab Maina who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mr. George Ossi said the main thrust of YouWIN is to generate jobs by encouraging and supporting aspiring young women entrepreneurs to develop and execute business ideas that will lead to job creation. She disclosed that in the scheme, selected 1,200 aspirants will be provided with Equity grants, about 110,000 job opportunities will be generated, up to 6,000 women entrepreneur aspirants will be provided with business training and they will be enabled to access a wide business professional network.
The honourable minister explained that the Presidency was moved to this initiative as a result of the high rate of unemployment with the belief that the gesture will enable young Nigerian women contribute better, their quota to the growth and development of Nigerian economy, hence she enjoined young Nigerian women with business ideas to maximize the opportunity.
In their separate remarks, the State Commissioners for Women Affairs and Social Developments of the South Eastern States: Lady Anne Dozie for Imo, Ugoeze Joy Alozie for abia, Mrs. Henrietta Agbata for Anambra, Mrs. Ndidi Chukwu for Enugu and Mrs. Chinyere Nwanoke for Ebonyi while appreciating the Federal and State governments for this wonderful gestures assured of their preparedness to work assiduously to ensure the success of the programme.
High point of the ceremony was the power point presentation by Mrs. Snowhite Ogunjinmi on the modality for the application for the grants online.
