History was made on the 7th of June 2011 when the Fifth House, ThirdAssembly First Session of the Imo State House of Assembly came intobeing following the proclamation made by the Fifth Executive Governorof the State, His Excellency Owelle Rochas Anayochukwu Ethelberth Okorocha (OON).

The Governor who spoke through his Deputy, Sir Jude Agbaso charged theLaw makers to remember that partisan politics was over hence membersshould brace up to the challenges of the hour which is not onlyattending to the needs of the citizens but embracing the sense ofurgency, single mindedness, personal sacrifices and complete dedication to the general good and welfare of Imo State.

Following the election of officers of the House, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Uwajumogu emerged as the Speaker through consensus agreement while Hon. Donatus Odoemena became the Deputy Speaker. The post of Majority Leader went to Hon. Mrs. Adaku Chinenye Ihuoma while Hon. IheanachoIhim clinched the post of Deputy Majority Leader. Other officers of the House as elected were the Minority Leader Hon. Barr. Ngozi Ekeji, Deputy Minority Leader went to Hon. Robertson Ekwebelem, the Chief Whip is Hon. Ugonna Ozuruigbo while his Deputy is Hon. Sir. Emeka Nwafor as the post of the Minority Whip went to Barr. Obinna Okwara.

In his Acceptance Speech, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Uwajumogu identified three areas yearning for immediate attention such as service to the people, the Executive arm and the Legislature. Hear him:

“It is with humility and profound sense of honour that I
accept the position of the Speaker of Imo House of Assembly. I will
devote my time, energy and everything within my power to make Imo  House of Assembly the best Legislature in the country. I will work tirelessly towards the upliftment of Imo House of Assembly. I promise to give you, all, with a true sense of quality leadership, equal representation and effective disposition to work”.

To the people of the State, he pledged that the House will enact people of the State, he pledged that the House will enact people oriented Laws and motions through effective Legislative responsibility which will put smiles onthe faces of the poorest of the poor in the bid to bring to thegrassroots the impact of the “Rescue Mission” of the government of His Excellency, Owelle Rochas Okorocha.

On the Executive, Mr. Speaker noted that both arms owe the populace the duty of working with one spirit through synergistic understanding to ensure the provision of dividends of democracy, adding that the Law making body will not constitute a clog on the wheels of the Rescue mandate of the executive.

Concerning the Legislature, Rt. Hon. Ben Uwajumogu told the newly
inaugurated Law makers that he will not mortgage or trade in the freedom of the mace but to create an enabling environment where they will feel free to ventilate their minds through a robust Legislative dialogue, debate and discussions which will in the end promote, integrate, incorporate, inculcate and aggregate the interest of their respective Constituencies.

As the Fifth House is now on ground and set for action with their
experienced Clerk, Barr. Chris Duru, the people of Imo State who stood under rain and shine to elect their spokes mouths expect nothing short of the best. It is expected that our Lawmakers will learn from and eschew all the mistake of the past years that bedeviled the Legislative arm both in this State and beyond. The electorates not only look forward to see them fulfill their campaign promises but also to effectively execute their Oversight functions and be the watch dog on the excesses of other arms to enhance adequate checks and balances.

We do not have any iota of doubt that the present crop of Legislators the State is blessed with will really enhance the move of the State to higher ground. For instance they have willingly cued into the spirit of sacrificing some of their rights and privileges to ensure the free education of this administration turns out well.
They have not only personally financed the furnishing of their offices but also accepted to use their personal vehicles for the time being due to lean resources.

It is the desire and expectation of the good of this State that Imo
State House of Assembly will consistently oil the wheel of the
machinery of the Rescue Mission as the State Governor, Owelle Rochas Anayo Okorocha (OON) and his Deputy Sir Jude Agbaso have set the pace worthy of emulation.

On the other hand, the good people of Imo State especially the
Traders, Okada men, Keke people, Farmers, Students but most
importantly our respected properly ordained men of God are enjoined to fervently and selflessly pray for our Law makers and the State Government, for it is through this joint synergistic effort that the Rescue Mission of the Owelle administration will be realized and the people of this State can sincerely be re-assured that Imo must be
