Imo State was not left out yesterday in the OCCUPY NIGERIA protest against the Fuel subsidy removal. People came out in their numbers and occupied the Okigwe round about leading up to the Government House. Also in attendance was His grace, Arch Bishop Obinna who showed up and addressed the crowd.
Overall, the demonstration was peaceful. Drama only kicked in when some “hoodlums” as described by our source attacked the protesters and began destroying their musical equipments and chairs.
Quoting our source, Mr. Emeka Ononamadu:
“…… Our spot was guarded by anti terrorist squad as if we are terrorists. But later in the day, a group that took off from government house was sent to attack Labour and CSOs destroying musical equipments and chairs. The Governor’s Chief of staff later addressed these hoodlums in government house.
Are we sure we have voted out repressive government in Imo state? If people are not protesting against Imo government and they allow the Labour/CSOs to be attacked, what will happen if they are protesting against the government?
I now know that they have a employment contract for our youths – using them as thugs?
This strike has further made governors in southeast look so cheap. The demonstration continue stomorrow. ….”
Na wa o!. So, what would have happened if the Chief of Staff, Prince Eze Madumere did not intervene?
But then again, if the thugs were not acting on orders from the “top”, why did the Police not call them to order? Rather, they stood and watched while harmless citizens were attacked? How does one explain that?
