REMAND HOME LAYOUT: Imo State Govt completes compensation payment to land owners.
According to information made available to IMO STATE BLOG, Imo State government through the Ministry of Lands, Survey & Urban Planning has completed payment of compensation to land owners at the Remand Home Layout.
The Agam Community in Obokwu Avu Owerri West Local Government Area, one of the original owners of the land received the sum of Three Million, Five Thousand naira (N3,005,000.00)only as the compensation for the portion of land measuring 54,494.37 square metres.
Prior to this, the sum of Twenty-One Million (N21,000,000.00) naira was paid to the people of Umuehieta Avu and Okwu Umuoma Nekede, who are the customary owners of the larger area measuring about 45.74 Hectares.
Speaking during the ceremony, Director of Lands and Deed Registry, Mr. Basil Ogwunga who represented the Honourable Commissioner, Uche Nwosu, warned that any transaction in a government land is illegal, pointing out that some aspect of the Agam Area of the land had been resold to individual buyers. He condemned these actions and described them as anti-government. However he disclosed that in the interest of peace and to maintain the cordiality of government/customary land owners relationship, the present government has also compensated the individual buyers.
Delivering a vote of thanks, Mr. Uboegbulem Iheanyi, a Community leader from Agam expressed his appreciation for government’s kind gesture. He apologized on behalf of his people for the encroachment and pledged their loyalty and support to the people-oriented government of Governor Rochas Okorocha.
