The 7th of June marked the second year anniversary of the 5th House 3rd assembly of the Imo State House of Assembly.
In his speech, Speaker Benjamin Uwajumogu commended the legislative members on their performance. He enumerated the achievements of the Imo State House of Assembly in the last session highlighting Bills, Motions passed and coverage of the House oversight functions.
Providing an analysis of Bills within the first and second sessions of the 5th house, Third assembly from June 7th 2011 to May 6th, 2013, Speaker Uwajumogu disclosed that there were a total number of 69 Bills presented of which, 36 were passed. 8 Bills were adjourned Sine die , 2 Bills consolidated while 5 Bills were stepped down. Presently there are 18 Bills pending.
Also, a total number of 103 motions were presented. With 87 motions passed, 4 motions adjourned Sine die, 2 motions stepped down, 1 withdrawn motion, 7 motions are pending.
Rt.Hon Uwajumogu further disclosed that through the budgetary role , the House restructured the State budgets (Budget of Rescue 1 & 2) to boost the capital expenditure to 70% which reduced recurrent expenditure to 30%. He added that the House through its committees supervised the distribution of relief materials to various areas of the State ravaged by flood disaster.
The event moved on to an enlightening lecture by former Member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Uche Onyeaguocha. Onyeaguocha who lectured on “A Legislative Agenda for Good Governance for Imo House of Assembly“ called on the Imo State House of Assembly to positively engage the Executive and Judicial arms of government by employing due process and the rule of law for effective governance to the people of Imo.
One of the highlights at the ceremony was the session were Legislators recounted their journey so far. In his remark, Hon. Acho Ihim who represents Okigwe in the State House of Assembly extolled the speakership of Rt.Hon Benjamin Uwajumogu. He praised Uwajumogu for “his humility, doggedness ,broad mindedness and exemplary leadership style.”
Notable dignitaries at the event included Deputy Governor Prince Eze Madumere who represented His Excellency, Owelle Rochas Okorocha , Wife of the Speaker, Chief Mrs. Helen Uwajumogu , Deputy Speaker ,Pharm. Donatus Ozoemena and some former members of the House of Assembly.
The House has adjourned sitting till August 27th.
